I grew up in a Shia Muslim family where I witnessed men continuously control and oppress women. My father was always emotionally and physically absent from our lives, leaving us completely unsupported. At home, my grandmother lived like a servant to my grandfather, doing all the work, only to be routinely humiliated, a reality she still endures. My mother suffered the same fate; despite dedicating herself fully, my father cheated on her, divorced her, and remarried. Growing up, Islam always made me feel inferior to my brother. He was granted endless privileges and allowed to do so many things that were strictly off-limits to me, simply because he was a male. It angered me how men around here inherit complete freedom, while women are denied even basic human rights and simple autonomy. Around here, men are entirely blind to their own misdeeds and routinely manipulate religion to serve their own interests. My father actively harasses and ogles other women, yet feels entitled to lecture my sister and me on wearing the hijab. Growing up in this environment deeply scarred my entire life and fundamentally shaped my personality. It left me carrying heavy emotional trauma, constantly hyper-aware, guarded, and struggling to feel secure. At my lowest points, processing all this neglect, hypocrisy, and domestic dysfunction made me suicidal. I quietly walked away from Islam during Ramadan this year, and for the first time, I feel actual peace. Though no one around me knows my secret, I take comfort in knowing I won't spend my life living under a lie. I may not have every detail figured out yet, but I am determined to leave this country and build a life of genuine freedom.
