@cyberfareedah: New Zealand’s prime minister has proposed banning children under 16 from social media. The proposal would put the responsibility on platforms to verify age, with possible fines of up to 10% of global revenue. Kids and parents would not be penalized. But this is still a proposal, not a law. It also does not currently have enough political support to pass before Parliament dissolves. And honestly, I do not support blanket social media bans for kids. The Electronic Frontier Foundation has repeatedly warned that in order to ban some users, platforms usually have to check everyone’s age. That can mean collecting government IDs, face scans, or more behavioral data from adults and kids. It can create new privacy and security risks while still failing to address why a child may be unsafe online. Blanket bans can also cut young people off from news, support, community, and creative spaces. This can be especially harmful for teens who do not have safe or supportive environments offline. I absolutely believe platforms should be held accountable for protecting young users. But protection should not require everyone to surrender more private information or treat every young person’s online life as inherently harmful. I would rather see stronger privacy laws, safer product design, real platform accountability, and more support for families and trusted adults. What do you think?
