According to the leaks, Hal uncovers dirt on a Guardian (Laura Linney) related to the Manhunters. She reaches out to John and offer him a deal: kill Hal in exchange for the ring. John refuses. The ring is then disabled, forcing Hal to go into hiding until he is discovered 10 years later.

one time around october 2 years ago i met straw hat goofy at a pizza shop at like 3 am, there was like a fight or something happening in the restaurant and he and i were the only folks not involved, so i complimented him on his content and then he invited me to eat pizza with him, he was very friendly

I love the conflict between them. As a manga/manhwa fan there's this trope of shitty teacher/mentor that i hate cause they are written to be assholes to their students for no reason other maybe comedic value or to make them cool. But the conflict here is acknowledged by both of them, there's a reason for it with Jon being hal replacement and Hal most likely having to die for that to happen so Hal is basically training his replacement. Not to mention there's something that must have happened to Hal to make him look/feel so exhausted
