What does sunflower lecithin have to do with your brain, liver AND breast milk? Quite a lot, actually. Sunflower lecithin isn’t a single nutrient. It’s a mixture of phospholipids, including phosphatidylcholine, and that’s where things get interesting. Phosphatidylcholine is an important structural component of our cell membranes and also provides choline, which the body can use to produce acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter involved in memory, attention, nervous system signalling and muscle contraction. Then there’s the liver. Phosphatidylcholine is required for the formation and secretion of VLDL particles that transport triglycerides out of the liver. Inadequate choline availability can interfere with this process and contribute to fat accumulating within liver cells. It’s also an important component of bile, where phosphatidylcholine helps protect the biliary system from the detergent-like effects of bile acids. And then we get to breastfeeding. Sunflower lecithin is commonly used by breastfeeding women experiencing recurrent blocked or narrowed milk ducts. As an emulsifier, lecithin may help reduce the tendency for milk fats to aggregate, although the clinical evidence for supplementation in this setting is limited. One important distinction: sunflower lecithin is not the same thing as pure phosphatidylcholine or a specific dose of choline. Its phospholipid composition can vary between products, so what I’m actually trying to support matters when I’m choosing between them. This is why I love understanding the physiology behind supplements rather than simply asking, “What is this supplement good for?” The sunflower lecithin shown in this video is available at Nourishing Apothecary. www.nourishingapothecary.com #sunflowerlecithin #phosphatidylcholine #choline #liverhealth #breastfeeding
