European here: Rivers as borders are actually quite fascinating because the river obviously doesn't stay in its original place. There are multiple ways to go about it: 1. You define the border by the rivers original place and if the river meanders, well, you got like small little "islands" of a country on the other riverside suddenly 2. You define a border that always changes with the river, for example the border is always right in the middle of the river or at the deepest part of the river bed 3. Same as no. 2, but the border is at the edge of the river, so left of it is country A, right of it is country B and the river belongs to both countries at the same time. (for example the moselle river between Germany and Luxembourg) All possibilities have their advantages and disadvantages. A kind of funny example of different borders (even though it's not a river but a lake) is the Lake Constance in the border triangle of Germany, Austria and Switzerland: Only the smaller lower part of the lake has an official border between Germany and Switzerland. Then there is a part that technically definitely belongs to the south-wester German state Baden-Württemberg because of some political stuff in the 19th century. But other then that the borders are surprisingly undecided: There are 3 theories. Switzerland likes the version where there are actual borders in the lake, Austria likes the version where the first 25 meters of depth off of the shore belongs to the countries and the rest is everyones and then there is a third option where the whole area apart for ports is everyones. Germany is a bit apathetic towards the whole topic. So there actually is no legally binding document or law betwenn the countries regulating this, but because it wouldn't really change anything in practice nobody does anything about, everyone just keeps their opinion about the border or non-border and everyone just uses the whole lake and rescue services of all 3 countries simply work closely together🤷♀️
