I turned 39 last week. 🥳 I did not even feel like posting about it. I am just…trying to figure myself out. Several people have expressed concern about my wellbeing in my DMs, and I am very grateful for you guys. 🥰 I am actually…very ok. Kind of. 😆 Let me explain… I am going through a lot, it is true, but not “bad” or necessarily negative things. More like…self-discovery things. I have been talking about mental health a bit more on here recently, and I would like to clarify something. What I am struggling with right now is primarily understanding myself and the way my brain works. Recently, I HAVE found myself experiencing more moments of deep sadness and frustration than I normally do, but they are largely connected to my current life/work situation, the burnout I have been experiencing, and the grief that occasionally comes with wondering how differently my life might have unfolded had I understood my brain in childhood…or even early adulthood. I do not feel as though I am generally unwell…I feel like I am processing A LOT. 😅 I am hopeful that having more answers, and then working through them in therapy, will help me understand myself with more compassion and eventually find my way out of the mental burnout I am currently experiencing. 😊 I was diagnosed with (severe) combined ADHD in early July, and upon starting medication I quickly began to notice some things about my cognitive functioning that I had never really understood before. The ADHD medication is working perfectly, many of the (terrible) comorbid conditions and detrimental behaviors I experienced for YEARS (DECADE+) have ceased, and I have zero of the negative side effects that commonly occur while taking this particular medication (insomnia and an inability to eat being two of the major ones). In fact, I am sleeping better than I ever have in my life. However, as an example of the said cognitive function issues I am noticing, one day about a month or so ago my daughter and I were at Sarit Centre, and upon exiting one of the shops I frequent (True Cosmetics), I genuinely could not figure out which way to turn/go…to the point of internally panicking and nearly crying in the mall. I have always been terrible with directions in general (everyone who knows me personally knows this), but this was absolutely another level completely…and was honestly quite a terrifying feeling. I feel it is important to note that I am a highly intelligent person (shocking, I know, judging by much of my previous TikTok content). 😆 Out of boredom during Covid I enrolled myself in a four-course astrophysics program online via the Australian National University, finished two of the courses with As, then did not even start the second two (thanks undiagnosed ADHD lol). I am bringing this up because I want you to understand this particular feeling that day in Sarit, this feeling of suddenly being completely lost in a very familiar place, while simultaneously thinking, “How the hell can my brain do some of the things it can do, and yet apparently not know which direction to walk in Sarit Centre?” 😆 This is just one of the events that led me to begin my search for answers. Actually, the first event that made me really begin to question myself happened just over a year ago. It was the end of my long term (four and a half year) and most serious relationship I have ever had (which very abruptly ended last August), and my genuine inability afterwards to cognitively make sense of WHY it had ended the way it did. This was what first made me seriously wonder whether there was something “wrong” with me…or, more accurately in hindsight, whether there was something about the way my brain processes the world that I simply did not understand. ***Continued in the comments because apparently TikTok was NOT prepared for my dissertation. 😂👇 #MentalHealth #MentalHealthAwareness #tiktokkenya #fypシ゚
