In today’s threat landscape, **authentication surfaces** have become the most abused and underestimated attack vector across modern environments. What Are Authentication Surfaces? Authentication surfaces are every point where identity is verified. They include: * Web application login pages * API authentication endpoints * VPN and remote access portals * Cloud IAM consoles (AWS, Azure, GCP) * SSO and OAuth flows * Mobile app authentication logic * Password reset and account recovery mechanisms Each surface represents a trust boundary. And attackers specialize in breaking trust. Why Authentication Is the Primary Target Attackers focus on authentication because it offers direct access with minimal noise. Unlike exploitation: * No memory corruption required * No zero-days needed * Often no alerts triggered Compromised credentials look like **legitimate access**. This is why identity-based attacks now dominate breach reports globally. Common Authentication Weaknesses Attackers Exploit 1. Weak Credential Hygiene * Reused passwords * Default credentials * Credential stuffing from leaked databases 2. Broken Authentication Logic * Improper session handling * Predictable tokens * Flawed password reset flows 3.
