🕰️ The departures board you see flipping letters back and forth is a split-flap display, a mechanical system once common in train stations and airports before digital screens took over. Each letter is printed on a physical flap, and when ferry schedules update, tiny motors flip them one by one creating that familiar click-clack sound you hear throughout the hall. What makes this board special is that it’s not just decorative. It’s still fully functional and updated daily, listing real ferry departures to places like Alameda, Oakland, Vallejo, Sausalito, and Larkspur. While most transit hubs replaced these boards decades ago, the Ferry Building intentionally kept this one as a working nod to its past. Opened in 1898, the Ferry Building has always been a gateway between San Francisco and the rest of the Bay. Today, this board is one of the few remaining mechanical split-flap displays still used for real transit in the U.S. a small detail locals may overlook, but visitors always stop to watch and listen #sanfrancisco #sanfranciscolife #california #bayarea #coolfacts
