So pronunciation has nothing to do with literacy…. There are so many ways to possibly pronounce a word. They might have read it, but never heard it spoken.

So instead of shaming people for not knowing words, we teach them what they mean and how to pronounce them. That separates those who are smart(those who know the material) and those who are intelligent(knows the material and helps others learn it).

Colonel is the debunk to this theory for me. Honestly I think many people have never heard these words actually spoken, they have only read them so it’s just how they sounded it out. Like tell me if you didn’t already know the word “colonel” and you read it in a book, you would not automatically say “kernel” in your head.

This is why I wish they would also define the word when they pronounce it. “Challah, it’s a bread. Epitome, the highest form of something.” I can forgive poor pronunciation if you still know the word.

yea well if you picked all these words up from reading and never HEARD them spoken then the pronunciation will be a little off. English is a fucky language.

A lot of the words are specifically selected because they don’t follow standard pronunciation rules, like Thyme, Challah, or Gnocchi. They aren’t English words, but instead of altering the spelling or the pronunciation, we get stuck with silent letters. Same with epitome. There’s no reason it’s NOT pronounced epi-tome other than it being of greek origin. Both pronunciations are phonetically correct.

Pronunciation has nothing to do with overall literacy. I’ve always struggled to pronounce a lot of words when reading them yet I was also in the top percentile of test scores in English on my junior year. I was one a very few people who had a perfect score on one of the state testings.

everyone saying “it’s not their fault they don’t know these obscure words” are missing the point. maybe you’ve never come across these words but you should know phonics to at least pronounce them phonetically. in these videos, the men can’t even do that. if it’s a weird word that isn’t pronounced how it’s spelled, they might get it wrong but at least it’ll show they can read. and phonics is literally elementary level education, so yes, it is HIGHLY concerning

Not everyone lives the same life. I got to go to college. My man had to quit school to support his guardian who had cancer. We have our own book club now and he enjoys it but struggles with stuff that’s obvious to me. I can’t build a house though so I think he has me beat 🙂

Challah is definitely regional because I've never seen that word in my life until this week. I'm from the South, so that's probably why.
