We use the SMART (Safe Mercury Amalgam Removal Technique) protocol, which incorporates multiple protective measures designed to help reduce mercury exposure for the patient, our dental team, and the environment during amalgam removal. You may notice that this looks very different from a routine filling appointment — protective equipment, isolation, specialized suction and other steps are all part of the process. For us, it’s about being intentional about how the material is removed, not simply getting it out. If you have old amalgam fillings, that does not automatically mean they need to be removed. Every patient and every restoration should be evaluated individually, and the risks and benefits of removal should be considered before treatment.
