its pretty hard to start up a container shipping company isnt it, it has high barriers to entry and is the natural efficient outcome. Besides letting global shipping be in the hands of thousands of people would be a logistical nightmare and very inefficient and would actually increase costs for the average person. In addition, the market is heavily regulated to make sure there isnt any cartel like behaviour.

thats due to things like regulation, subsidies, patents and the state overall that allow such corporations to stay at the top and make artificial barriers to entry for competition. thats why. not capitalism. its the state

to be fair even though im left leaning, as nav arch student the maritime industry is a different beast than running your average businesses, it will cost more to start your own company, owning a ship is hard because its a very hard industry to enter and the big 10 are there since they have the resources, cuz yknow owning tankers, container vessels, bulk carriers etc are VERY pricey and maintance, fueling etc adds more to it, especailly if we are talking international, so its bound to happen that corporations with more resources tend to dominate since the bar for entry is THAT high, tho then again i could be wrong and id like opinions from other senior experts in the maritime field.

Just economies of scale, would you rather pay significantly more for container storage on smaller ships? Increasing the cost to transport all good.
