@dershpiel: Jewish billionaire Michael Bloomberg has given billions of dollars to Johns Hopkins University, using his fortune to expand financial aid, medical education and research. Bloomberg graduated from Johns Hopkins in 1964 with an engineering degree. Over the decades, his support grew into some of the largest donations ever made to an American university. In 2018, Bloomberg announced a massive $1.8 billion gift dedicated to financial aid. The money allowed Johns Hopkins to admit students without considering whether their families could afford the school and expanded support for lower- and middle-income students. He followed that in 2024 with another $1 billion gift focused heavily on medical education. The donation made medical school tuition-free for most Johns Hopkins medical students while expanding financial aid for nursing, public health and other graduate students. Bloomberg has also funded major research and medical projects, including $125 million for a malaria research institute and $120 million toward the 12-story Charlotte R. Bloomberg Children’s Center. His relationship with Johns Hopkins stretches back more than six decades. Bloomberg also served as chairman of the university’s Board of Trustees from 1996 to 2002, and its School of Public Health was renamed in his honor in 2001. Bloomberg, the Jewish founder of the financial-data and media company that bears his name and a former New York City mayor, has turned his business fortune into one of the largest philanthropic commitments in American higher education.
