Licensing, bonding, and insurance requirements vary by state and by industry, so you need to check the requirements that apply to your specific business. And while insurance isn’t legally required in every situation, having appropriate coverage is a very good idea. Think about what can happen when you’re working in someone’s home: You’re touching their belongings. Moving furniture and valuables. Working around children and pets. Using equipment. And sometimes you’re working in someone’s home while they’re not there. That’s a lot of responsibility. When I decided to insure my own business, I started by contacting the company that handles my auto and renters insurance. Even if your current insurance company doesn’t offer the business coverage you need, they’re a good place to start because they may be able to point you toward the right type of coverage or provider. My biggest advice? Do the boring stuff correctly from the beginning. You don’t need to spend months getting every detail of your business perfect before you start. But you do want to make sure you’re operating legally and protecting yourself and your clients. Check your state’s requirements. Get the appropriate insurance. Look into bonding if it makes sense for your business.
