S400 is the frame/cartridge size, much larger frame and shaft than an s300. If it says it’s an “S473/83”, then 73mm is the inducer compressor wheel size, could be a 96-102mm exducer. 83mm is the turbine “inducer”, and depending could be a 74mm inducer, so kinda backwards from the compressor size but not if that makes sense. A/R means Area over Radius, basically divide across sectional inlet of turbine housing by radius from turbine center line to the “centroid/center” of that area. Small a/r as you found out has faster spool up and more torque on low end, but can create too much back pressure resulting in choking up top and it can over speed the turbo if not careful. Larger is opposite, longer time to spool up in higher RPM’s, but best efficiency is up top etc. I have an 06’ 5.9, 2nd gen swap, someone put all the parts on when I bought the truck and they put on an s369 and it lags so bad in high elevation and towing, I gotta stay on top of the charger a lot and time everything right, this winter I’m building my own compound kit with an s363/s475 combo and ditching that pos Smeding turbo…so yeah definitely do your homework to get that truck where you want it for towing, daily driving and having fun! Good luck!
