@thecountertruth: There was a time when pharmacists were professionally instructed NOT to discuss a prescription’s therapeutic effects or composition with the patient. 💊 And no—it wasn’t because of a “Doctor-Patient Privacy Act.” In the 1950s, the American Pharmaceutical Association (now APhA) Code of Ethics reflected a very different era of pharmacy practice and the physician-patient relationship. Pharmacists were expected to dispense prescriptions and refer questions about the medication’s therapeutic effects or composition back to the prescriber. This was also an era when undisclosed placebo prescribing was more accepted than it is today and modern standards surrounding informed consent, patient autonomy, medication counseling, shared decision-making, and patients’ rights were still evolving. Modern pharmacy looks very different. Pharmacist counseling and medication education help patients understand what medication they’re taking, why they’re taking it, how to use it safely, potential side effects and interactions, and when they should seek additional medical care. Pharmacists talking to patients about their medications didn’t destroy the physician-patient relationship. Empowering patients with information was progress.
