the MCs being a futbol player and a telenovela star is a huge red flag imo. the two most stereotypical professions you could have 😭

I’ll be honest, I feel like this is the result of people begging white authors to include more POC in books instead of just reading from POC authors.

There is a MASSIVE difference, also, between including characters of different marginalizations and telling their stories FROM their POVs. “Please include characters of color” is not an equivalent to “please share this very real lived experience as though you have any clue what it’s like”

I am a sensitivity reader, and I always get authors who are not POC writing from those perspectives. I always ask them. Why do you think you're the most qualified to write this story. They can never answer that question.
I get angry because a white author writing POC character are more likely to get trad published before actual POC writers.

As a Black woman im also irritated with you cause why are they so entitled to lived experiences they don’t have. It’s annoying. 😭

Not the point of the video, but Mary Shelley actually HAD the experience to write Frankenstein because she had experienced the all consuming loss of losing her newborn child. It's not just a quirky story about some mad proffesor.
That being said, the comparison between Frankenstein and a contemporary story about the Latinx community is distasteful at best and racist at worst. Especially in the current political climate.

AND (not that Frankenstein is any sort of comparison) but Mary Shelley DID write Frankenstein after losing her first child and desperately tried to bring her back to life......so that bitch is wrong on multiple levels

Is she gonna write a book with black leads next where the FMC is an RNB singer and the MMC is a football player?

You are 100% right. I’m a white woman who took a lot of creative writing classes in a school with no diversity, and white people write about other cultures the way someone would write about a trip to the zoo. They would never think of uplifting those voices because they don’t actually think about the voices at all. Just their own perceived experience of that culture.

I agree. It feels like salt being rubbed in your wounds. And they do it just because they can. White authors also do this when they attempt to write black stories and just drop the n word because… art. Dishonorable mention: Those We Thought We Knew by David Joy.

The colonization spirit just lives within some of them. Like it’s insane to not see anything wrong with this. This is my same take when white people write books or scripts about slavery or civil rights era from the black persons’ POV. Absolutely not.

although i agree with most of what you’re saying i feel like it’s kinda limitating to say who can write which stories. i think the problem with this one isn’t that she’s a white author without the latam/immigrant experience, but rather that she probably hasn’t done any research on the matter and/or haven’t read people who have had those experiences. maybe it’s a misunderstanding on my part, but i don’t agree that being of an ethnicity or gender or sexuality should dictate what you can or cannot write. that’s why white authors only write white characters, and as much as i can (and i do) read poc authors, i feel like inclusion should be an integral part of any story written by anyone, because that’s the reality, the problem is that most of these authors in privileged positions won’t do their research.

it's because we are not real people to them. We are "characters" it falls into the category of " wow you are so exotic 🤩" because to them we ARE exotic fantasy creature,so to them this is just " fantasy" . That's why they compared it to Frankenstein.
It's really just casual racism in a different front, under the guise of " I'm just trying to be diverse"

theres a difference between having poc protagonists and ensuring that their stories are authentic and genuine and stepping over a line and trying to portray a lived experience that isnt yours to tell and becomes a stereotypical parody
