Somewhere a tracker gets updated every Friday at four, and nobody has opened it in years. That is not a story about a lazy manager. That is what a company looks like from the inside when the man above you has six people reporting to him and no way to watch six people work. The tracker stopped being a report years ago. It became a substitute for eyesight, and everybody kept filling it in because the alternative was being invisible. Here is the part that costs money. When nobody can see your result, you get paid for the evidence instead. Evidence is measured in hours, and hours have a hard ceiling. There are only so many in a week. Everybody earning above that ceiling has the same thing going for them. There is a result somewhere with their name on it, and somebody can point at it. So the question is not how to write the reports faster. A better question is which part of your week leaves something behind that still has your name on it a month later. For most people the honest answer is an hour, maybe two. That number is not a verdict on you. It tells you which rung you are standing on, and every rung has a tool that fits it. One tool fits this rung, and it is narrow and boring. Once a month, finish one thing that survives you leaving the room. A document somebody else picks up and uses. A process that runs without your reminders in it. A number that moved and stayed moved. Reports still get written. That part is not optional. They are the price of being employable somewhere nobody can watch you work. There are whole jobs where the paperwork is the product: compliance, audit, safety. Worth knowing which of the two you sit in. In the one where the paperwork only proves you were present, pay that price in an hour and not in a week. ... Years of proof and nothing to point at is a real outcome, and it lands on careful people far more often than it lands on lazy ones.
