@the_anti_guru: Try this cognitive defusion exercise when a negative thought starts feeling like an unquestionable fact. #cognitivedefusion #acttherapy #overthinking #psychology #selfawareness
I give my negative self talk a man's voice which makes me laugh and immediately realize that idea is untrustworthy and idiotic by nature.

I resonate with cognitive defusion, but “I am having the thought” still implies ownership. I prefer: “A thought is present.” Awareness doesn’t require identification.

Pro tip for anyone with ADHD/OCD: do this for your BODY too! 🧠🫀
When your nervous system reacts instantly, you get that immediate gut drop or racing heart. That physical hit tricks your brain into believing the thought is a real emergency.
When that happens, defuse both:
. The thought: "I’m having the thought that..."
. The body: "I’m noticing that..."
It takes about 90 seconds for an adrenaline to pass if you don't feed it more thoughts. The more you practice this, the less power those thoughts have and faster you can move past them 🖤 gl everyone, youre loved

Excellent! Try this. I am having the thought that… fallowed by what can I control here? Your brain can’t problem solve and complain at the same time.

It sounds silly, but I found it very powerful to realize not every thought I have is true.

It’s good to see yourself observing your thoughts rather than being your thoughts

Kinda the same thing, I call that voice by my ex's name. He was mean and wrong, so that thought now has no weight to it.

it's very grounding to practice this. I also didn't realize how many thoughts I was having and that my nervous system was processing as real.

I started saying I was experiencing things rather than saying I am those things - I am experiencing frustration softens I am frustrated. Helped more than I thought it would.

I do this practice with feelings. It’s inspired by Zen. If I am sad, I say to myself, “Sadness is here.” If afraid, I say, “Fear is here.” Also anger is here, despair is here, confusion is here. It acknowledges the emotion while naming i5 as separate from “me”. It helps me.

I named my anxiety brain Rhonda and I start sentences with "Rhonda is telling me that...". It literally works!

Another technique I used frequently if my thoughts are strictly internal, is to refer to myself in third person. For example, “Susan is having the thought that she is XXXXX…. “ which also provides an additional layer between yourself and your thoughts about yourself. Susan becomes “she.” Aka; externalized. Don’t try this out loud, you will be hauled away to the nearest madhouse, but it works very well if you use it internally.
