![How do stones grow? In the sleepy village of Costești, where Romania keeps its strangest secrets tucked between low hills and orchards, the trovants sit like a congregation of patient elders. Bulbous, spheroid, some as small as a fist, others swelling to several meters across, they look less like rocks and more like thoughts that have hardened mid-sentence. Locals have long sworn they multiply after rain, sprouting smaller nodules like offspring clinging to a mother stone. In a country where folklore walks hand in hand with geology, these peculiar formations have become a quiet pilgrimage for the curious. Scientifically, trovants are sandstone concretions, formed millions of years ago during the Miocene epoch when this land lay beneath shallow seas. Mineral-rich waters cemented sand around a core, layer upon layer, until time itself became their sculptor. When exposed to heavy rainfall, the pressure of water within their porous structure can cause subtle expansion, sometimes cracking the surface and creating the illusion of growth. The Trovants Museum Natural Reserve in Vâlcea County safeguards dozens of them, a modest open-air gallery where geology performs its slow magic without spectacle. No sorcery, just sediment and patience. But folklore refuses to surrender so easily. Villagers once believed these stones were alive, capable of movement, protectors of homes when placed in gardens, talismans against misfortune.
