@riddimwhisperer: The Era in Uganda Music History Where Every Hit Came With a Target Bushingtone, a producer and former key member of the Goodlyfe management team of Mowzey Radio & Weasel, takes us back to a very different Ugandan music industry. He says there was a massive blockage of new music. Getting a song into the mainstream wasn't easy, so artists sometimes had to create competition, provoke rivals and manufacture battles just to get people talking about their music. Anyone standing in their way could become the subject of a diss track — even club owners. That's how songs like “Kidula Kyo” ~ I hate your bar/club ~could come out of industry conflicts. But there was one artist who frustrated their strategy: Bobi Wine. Bushingtone says they expected Bobi to respond whenever they provoked him. Even when Jeff Kiwa would allegedly insult or disrespect him, Bobi often refused to take the bait. Instead, Bushingtone remembers Bobi essentially saying: “I know you guys are silly, but I love you.” And that was the end of it. 😂 Bushingtone says this surprised him because he knew Bobi's reputation and his history with FireBase, so he expected a fight. But the bigger story is what the industry was like at the time. Studios were few. Artists would gather around places like National Theatre. Some musicians could perform their songs using instrumentals and live musicians for years before finally recording them. So when somebody finally released a song to the mainstream, the whole network knew. And if that song became a hit, success could come with another problem: you had suddenly become a target. Bushingtone remembers an era where having a hit could mean needing security because you had automatically become someone's competition. It's a fascinating reminder that some of the music wars we remember today weren't happening in isolation. They were also products of an industry where there simply wasn't enough space for everyone. We are a safe, chill space for Uganda music lovers celebrating Ugandan music, artists, culture and everyone who has contributed to our music ecosystem, across East & Central Africa , the diaspora and anywhere in the world whether Ugandan or not. #riddimwhisperer #radioandweasel #bobiwine #goodlyfemusic #galaxytvug
