easier is a word i want to use carefully because i think it has been oversold in the context of new motherhood and i do not want to add to the overselling. the nights did not get easier in the way that hard things usually get easier, which is through the accumulation of skill or the passage of time or the solving of the problem that was making them hard. the baby did not suddenly sleep. my body did not suddenly recover. the 3am did not shorten or soften or become more manageable in any of the ways i had been hoping it would. the contents of the nights stayed exactly what they were. and yet. easier. and the only thing that had changed was the feeling of being the only one in it. and i have spent a lot of time since then thinking about what that means about the relationship between the actual difficulty of a thing and how hard it feels to be inside it. because those two things, the actual difficulty and the felt difficulty, are not the same thing and they do not move in lockstep the way i assumed they did before this. the actual difficulty is fixed. it is the weight of the thing, the objective measure of what it asks of you. the felt difficulty is something else entirely. it is the actual difficulty plus everything the conditions around it add. and one of the heaviest things a condition can add is the belief that you are the only one carrying it. remove that belief and the actual difficulty does not change. but the felt difficulty drops in a way that is real and physical and immediate and there is no other word for it except easier. not easier. the same. but lighter. #postpartum #newmom #postpartumsupport #momtok #momlife
