Shoprite has already been exposed for reusing expired ingredients for their cooked and baked goods. I worry about how they will abuse the lack of verifiable Expiry dates etc 😭💔

Allow me to argue that Shoprite is protecting their market. Shoprite is not doing anything wrong in my opinion. The market changes with time, and if companies like Shoprite don’t adapt, they risk being ran out of business. The same way that streaming services like Netflix ran companies like block buster out of business. Same thing happened to Black berry, Kodak and so many more companies.

People are crying foul play by Shoprite. But, in all truth, this is the cost of doing business. You innovate and you're bound to be met with new entrants and competition in the market. You just have to think of new ideas and differentiate etc. Perhaps the small players have an advantage. Shoprite can't really reach into the 'crevices' of the township. Perhaps the smaller guys consider operating and scale at a 'spaza shop'/micro level as well.

I wonder impact this has on brand teams. They gain the coin, probably at a higher volume? But lose overall branding in the same households that used to buy the product in the packaging. On the Shoprite issue, gcwalisa, skubu etc did not have a moat to begin with. The idea was not entirely defensible. Shoprite has a bigger bank roll.

People will stop buying bulk because if I have the option of buying R10 maize meal every week why would I buy 25kg to last 3months. It will demage things for food manufacturing companies. We bought bulk to save but if I can phanda 5 and get rice then I won't buy full products.

I know a lot of people don't like that the big players like ShopRite are also piloting this.ie.corporate greed etc..however my take is more on the positive side.. Poverty Alleviation.South Africa depends highly on social grants which don't cover much.this means more people can get access to basic groceries etc,and with the network they already have,it's a no brainer.
