Sebaceous hyperplasia….ugh!! Sebaceous hyperplasia is an overgrowth of the sebaceous gland. Sebaceous literally means “relating to oil” and hyperplasia means an “an increase in the number of cells in an organ or in tissue”. So the sebaceous hyperplasia is just the sebaceous gland growing outside its home so that we can see it. This means that there is no popping or squeezing that’s going to get rid of this gland that is actually attached to our body. The ways that we can get rid of sebaceous hyperplasia are electrocautery, laser, cryotherapy and at home with the use of retinoids. This is definitely something that you want to consult a doctor before taking any action to ensure that none of the sebaceous hyperplasia are basal cell carcinoma. They present similarly and can be that form of skin cancer. Always good to get a check! If you decide to have a physician treat these just know that you will need to have them re-treated probably yearly (or every 2 years) as the gland will continue to grow. Ladies, it is worth getting your hormones checked because in some cases if hormones are out of balance it can lead to more sebaceous hyperplasia.
