In the past, washi paper was extremely valuable, so it was carefully folded to wrap offerings for religious ceremonies and important gifts. As washi became more widely produced and available to ordinary people, paper folding gradually developed from a formal tradition into the origami we know today. Japanese origami also developed somewhat differently from paper-folding traditions in other countries. One important idea was to create shapes mainly by folding the paper, rather than cutting it. Even as a Japanese person, I didn’t know why Japanese origami was a little different from paper folding in other countries. I also didn’t know that its history was connected to washi paper.
