@drgolly: If you’re room-sharing, try putting the bassinet on Dad’s side of the bed. It sounds almost too simple; but it can make a difference, particularly when baby wakes and isn’t actually due for a feed yet. Here’s why 👇 🧠 Mum is biologically primed to respond After birth, hormonal and brain changes can make mums incredibly tuned in to every little grunt, wriggle and stir. That’s brilliant for bonding and feeding ...but it can also mean responding (and offering a feed) before baby has had a chance to resettle. 👃 Baby knows where the milk is Babies can recognise their mother’s scent, and being close to a breastfeeding mum may encourage feeding-related cues and behaviours. 💪 This is where Dad can come in If baby wakes before they’re likely to need another feed, Dad can be the first to try settling them, without milk being immediately on the menu. Try this tonight: → Move the bassinet to Dad’s side → If baby stirs, Dad tries a pat, shush, cuddle or gentle rock → If baby is showing hunger cues, Mum feeds as usual The goal is never to delay a feed when baby is hungry. It’s simply to give baby the opportunity to resettle when hunger isn’t the reason they’ve woken. And if it works? Mum may get a slightly longer stretch of uninterrupted sleep; which can be very welcome during postpartum recovery.
