@becki_111: Sometimes one of the hardest parts of parenting my autistic daughter is knowing when I need to stay firm. 💔 I'd already asked Bethany six times to stop feeding Max, and eventually I had to change my tone and be firmer. The second she started crying, I felt awful and every part of me wanted to back down. But that's the difficult bit — sometimes I still have to say no, even when seeing her upset breaks my heart. I can't be the only autism parent who finds this SO hard. ❤️ #autism #autismparenting #autisticchildren #specialneedsparenting #autismfamily
Im sorry but if shes been told off she shouldnt get a cuddle afterwards even if shes crying shes being told off for doing something she shouldnt i dont see what the problem is were is the consequences

Do you ever calmly take the dog away or does it produce the same result as being firm? ❤️❤️❤️

I found explaining the “whys” really helped my children understand and once they understood fully they would listen. I never could give a simple “No” , I had to give an in depth explanations as to why that “No” had relevance. I know every child is different and you probably explained yourself the first 5 times you asked her, but I felt this might help one parent out there knowing what I found beneficial and what worked for my children . I will put an example of how I explain things: Instead of saying no , it would be something along the lines of “ No more, because our dogs belly is only small and can only take so much food, over feeding will make the dog uncomfortable and he has his own special dog food , our food is only allowed in small amounts “ and then add something like “ perhaps, you can help me feed him his food later on this afternoon instead?” . Obviously, every child and family is completely different and every parent knows their child and what will work best for them, this worked welll for us and still does but may not be successful for another child as every situation is different, I just hope it helps someone 💗

It is hard, you never want to thik you've distressed her in any way, shes definitely listening, or you wouldn't get the reaction. maybe keep the dog out when Bethany is eating, teaching them both, Bethany don't feed the dog from the table and the dog can't beg for food, when Ele did this with our doggo, it was, "we dont eat dog food, the dog doesn't eat people food" 😉

As a sen mum myself i dont find that firm after 6 times the dog would of been removed from the room and my daughter would of had a 'fun' activity from her ruteen taken away for a period of time my daughter is 6 🙈 maybe im hard on my her, i set boundaries and have consequences. she has no understanding of danger and little to no understanding but setting boundaries is ok. i use the dots system allot and as i would for my 7 year old or 13 year old count down from 5. on the hope one day she will understand why im setting the boundaries and telling her no.
please dont feel awful for telling her no more. your guiding her threw life thats our jobs as parents.

I have to tell my granddaughter off now and then, with a firmer voice,if she cries I just give her a cuddle and explain what she done wrong, and she understands,it's like her spinning chair,it's heavy and she picks it up herself,I've told her not to ask will fall on her feet and hurt her, she now comes to me to move it xx

On another note , you kept so calm and your tone was perfect here , you comforted her straight away and made her feel safe while still letting her know that she needed to stop . She calmed down quickly because you know her so well and acted accordingly and efficiently . You’re doing amazing and it’s clear you’ve become her safe space ❤️👏🏻

Don’t let the situation start then. Put the dog away before mealtimes

How more you correct her the better it will go eventually. Let her have that meltdown. My daughter always had a meltdown when I said no. Now she 9/10 times the doesn't react. She just gets up and regulate herself by doing something else.
Autistic children also just need parenting.
