@angelina.cantali: When I took Mum to the doctor to check on her situation, her report showed that she was dehydrated. 💔 It was another heartbreaking reminder that, with dementia, the smallest things can become the greatest dangers. Dehydration is about so much more than not drinking enough water. For someone living with dementia, it can lead to increased confusion, exhaustion, weakness, falls, urinary tract infections, kidney problems, and even hospitalisation. Whenever I visit Mum, one of the first things I do is offer her a drink. Tonight, Marco handed her a glass of water, and she drank it so quickly. I couldn’t help but wonder how many elderly people are quietly sitting somewhere feeling thirsty unable to ask for a drink, or simply forgetting that they need one. If you have a loved one in aged care, please don’t underestimate the importance of hydration. Offer them water regularly. Gently encourage them to take a few sips, even if they initially say no. Sometimes they don’t realise how thirsty they are until they take that first sip. These small acts of love can prevent serious complications and make such a meaningful difference to their comfort and quality of life. Our elderly deserve more than to simply be cared for.
