@blackonbuzz: Were the Ancient Egyptians African? In an exchange with African American journalist Roland Martin, controversial political figure Richard Spencer declared: “The Egyptians are not African.” But Ancient Egypt emerged in the Nile Valley of northeastern Africa, thousands of years before today's racial categories and identities took shape. The more complicated debate concerns how Ancient Egyptians should be understood in terms of ancestry, ethnicity and appearance across thousands of years of Egyptian history. But describing Ancient Egypt as an African civilisation isn't a matter of opinion. Its geography, history and development are rooted firmly on the African continent. What becomes interesting is why the Africanness of one of history's most celebrated civilisations continues to provoke such heated debate. What do you think?
