things I wish I knew before 👇🏼 For our first backpacking trip of the season, we decided we wanted a little shock to the system and decided to hike to the bottom of the Grand Canyon to sleep and then hike all the way back out 😅 Honestly this trip wasn’t really on my bucket list, but it should have been!! It was so cool to sleep at the bottom and you really get a whole new appreciation for this giant hole in the ground!! Here are some additional tips: • the trail we hiked was the hermit trail. We hiked about 9 miles down, camped at monument creek, hikes another 1.5 miles to the water, camped at granite rapids, and then hiked all the way out 5,300 feet back up. • rangers do not recommend hiking all the way down or all the way up in a day!! It’s very strenuous, can cause elevation sickness, and can be REALLY HOT. Do with that what you please. • early starts!!! On the way out of the canyon, we left at 4:30 am and were able to hike in the shade (specifically because of where this trail is) for 90% of the hike out. This SAVED us. The sun was so brutal. • to lighten our packs we ditched the rain fly, any extra food, and any luxuries. • permits can be found on recreation.gov! • we got divebombed by bats at the bottom of the canyon once night hit or early in the mornings. I don’t know what to do about that one, our red lights on our headlamps helped though!! • know that there are tons of options!! When I first started researching, I assumed there was only the main trails everyone goes down, but we ended up at a campsite all to ourselves • the Colorado River is intensely flowing at granite rapids, so swimming is not really possible. Wading is!! Just be careful, the river is so powerful • we also got to watch a bunch of rafters tackle one of the harder rapids in the canyon!!!! That trip has now been added to our bucketlist!! • to get to the hermit trail, if you get a permit, you get a code to drive your car out there so you don’t have to take the shuttle! Okay that’s all I can think of right now, but ask me any other questions you have about the Grand Canyon or what to bring!! #grandcanyon #hikersoftiktok #backpacking #nationalparks #campinglife
