The smear test is only testing for HPV type of cancer, right? Not all the other possible forms of cervical cancer. I've heard confusing informations about this, would love some proper answer 😅

Personally I think this is a godsend. I've found it offensive and infuriating that the ONLY reason my GP surgery ever gets in touch with me is to send a reminder for a smear test. Can I get a regular appointment to discuss other health issues? No, but they are determined to examine my genitals. It feels degrading, and no amount of 'its important healthcare' will change that if it's the ONLY healthcare the NHS seem to care about when it comes to me. I can't wait to stop getting these letters. Maybe they can now use those resources to ask to check my bloods, or lungs, or something else instead

While this is all true it’s worth mentioning that when you have a full smear test your sample is first tested for HPV and the cells are only checked for changes if it’s positive. If it’s negative they don’t look at the cells. Finding this out when I’d gone through the excruciating procedure only to know they never even looked at the cells I suffered to give them made me absolutely furious

As a practice nurse I think this is an amazing development. However I worry that the reasons and barriers a lady might have for not wanting to attend screening at the practice will be exacerbated by a positive HPV result and they be even more frightened about the test and what the result might be in some cases. I’m not in an area that has trialled self-testing though so have absolutely no experience as yet 😅 very intrigued to see how it goes 😊

I think all women should be offered the HPV vaginal swab test. Since the rules changed, there's now no need to put ourselves through the full cervical screening when the cells are ONLY examined if we test HPV positive. I had the full smear test last month, tested HPV negative, so there was literally no point in doing it. I'll wait for the swab to be sent to me next time! And only have the smear if I test positive for HPV (or until they routinely examine every sample again)

The problem with this is that a positive test leaves us vulnerable to the same traumatic/non trauma informed care that a smear does anyway. People like me are left taking our chances 🤷♀️

It would also be useful to say that other countries have done this already so there is plenty of evidence that self swabbing is very effective. This is the norm in Australia and aims to engage women who typically wouldn’t have engaged in an invasive smear test

just had my smear come back HPV positive but no abnormal cells.. after having HPV and cin 2 over 10 years ago.. now have to have another smear in a year.

From what I understand reading all the leaflets the GP smear test only checks from the cell changes if the HPV test is positive

If a smear test is necessary can’t we work at finding a better way to do it? And in particular my cervix is to one side, can’t we find ways to get the cells that work well for people like me too.

I got mine done at my local gp surgery, it was very quick and easy, I will definitely not be doing something like this at home.
