@travis.woo.trades: The moment you start picking and choosing which system signals to take based on the news, you’re trading a different system. That matters. If your backtest assumes every valid signal is taken, but you skip trades because a headline feels scary, those historical statistics no longer describe what you’re actually doing. Now you’ve added discretion. And discretion adds two things: More time. More uncertainty. A long backtest can already include wars, recessions, crashes, bubbles, and countless headlines. That doesn’t guarantee the future will look like the past. But it gives you a framework for understanding how the rules behaved across very different environments. The harder part is psychological. Any real trading system will lose trades. Sometimes several in a row. That is not automatically evidence that the system stopped working. Risk is part of the business. If you cannot tolerate the losses your strategy historically experienced, the answer may be smaller risk—not selectively overriding the system whenever you feel afraid.
