POV: You Peed “Just in Case”. Sources- PMID 31499079 drmelanieziaziaris on TT While peeing "just in case" seems practical, doing it frequently can accidentally train your body to develop an overactive bladder. Your bladder is a trainable organ primarily made of a flexible tissue called the detrusor muscle, which contains specialized stretch receptors. Normally, these receptors stretch and signal your brain only when the bladder is reasonably full. However, if you constantly empty it when it holds very little liquid, you prevent the muscle from ever stretching to its natural capacity. Because your nervous system is highly adaptable, it quickly recalibrates to this routine. The stretch receptors become hypersensitive, causing your brain to interpret a nearly empty bladder as completely full. Consequently, the detrusor muscle becomes twitchy and begins to squeeze prematurely at very low volumes. This premature contraction causes that sudden, intense urge to urinate, meaning your attempt to avoid inconvenience has inadvertently trained your bladder's alarm system to trigger far too early. #toilet #peeing #health
