@dr_mikem: We measure and weigh your child at every visit, but the growth chart is NOT just about your child’s size or comparing his to other kids The growth chart is the best tool we have to protect child’s overall development The first 2-3 yrs is a time of rapid change and growth of the body and a critical window for the brain 🧠 Any disruption to that process : whether it’s a nutritional issue , underlying condition or environmental stressor can have long term impact on Neuro-cognitive outcome The growth chart is the best “early warning system” we have to intervene before an issue that shows up on there will impact brain development. Save this for your next pediatric office visit!
I think the disconnect with the growth chart happens when the provider ignores all other markers to come to an overall assessment. In my experience, it didn’t matter that my children were hitting every physical and cognitive developmental marker wonderfully and showed nothing but good, healthy positive signs of development. All that mattered was where they landed on the grown chart but I can’t control that I just make petit kids. That’s when it becomes so anxiety inducing and a point of immense stress rather than a helpful tool, for moms especially.

How accurate are the height predictions for children that use the parents height?

My son was born at 27 weeks... we threw out that growth chart a long time ago 🤣 this week the pediatrician said, "look how big he is now!"... still in the 0 percentile for his actual age 😆

It’s confusing that during pregnancy they’d tell you a growth percentile under 10% is concerning, and then it’s not concerning once the baby is born…?

Yes. I learned this when I first had my child and when we came home she wasn’t regaining the weight she lost after I had her. So they had me bring her in every week after I had her to monitor her weight.

Honestly if my pediatrician isn’t concerned when he’s going through it, then I’m not either

I had my daughter at 30w5d. She’ll be 3 on Halloween. I struggle with the chart and what it means for her!

We dropped weight at 2 months which our pediatrician admitted us to the hospital that day. We were there for five nights. It turned out that my daughter‘s hemangiomas were becoming an issue and we need to fortify her formula and breastmilk and get her the slowest flow rate. We now use her growth chart to see when we’re going to get back to her initial percentile, so we don’t have to continue fortifying her food. We dropped from the 8th percentile, to .3 percentile and that was scary. She’s doing better and gaining weight consistently 😊

Unfortunately, it seems like the chart is comparing.

My son has ARFID after getting COVID at 1 years old. The growth chart helped us know when we could start cutting back on formula bottles as he was gaining enough weight. He's 3 now and he's finally eating enough 😭
