An AI agent is just a chatbot in a loop. Here's how. The AI you talk to every day is a chat — you ask, it answers, it stops. An agent does one thing differently, and it's the whole secret: it runs in a loop. You give it a goal, and instead of answering once, it starts working. It takes a step, then checks itself — am I done, did I hit the goal? If not, it figures out the next step and goes again. Step, check, step, check, until the job is actually finished. But a loop needs hands. On its own, a chat can only talk. So you give the agent tools — connect it to your email, your calendar, your files — and now it can actually do things: read a real email, write one, send it. The tools are its hands; the loop is its brain. Watch it handle an email: it reads what came in, checks if it has enough to reply, grabs more context if it needs to, writes the reply, checks it, and sends — deciding its own next move each pass, start to finish.
