BHADMUS :
I actually think we’re mixing two different arguments here. Yes, purchasing power is much worse today, but look at it relative to minimum wage.
In 1990, minimum wage was about ₦250/month. So ₦50,000 was equal to 200 months of minimum wage — about 16.7 years of minimum wage.
Today, minimum wage is ₦70,000/month. To have the same 200-month ratio, you’d need about ₦14 million.
So yes, things are genuinely harder today, but I don’t think the argument should be “our parents could build houses because money was easy and we have no chance.”
Money management matters too. If you weren’t financially smart in 1990, you could still earn a decent income and be broke. If you’re not financially smart today, even a much higher income can disappear.
The economy is bad, no doubt. But income, purchasing power, spending habits, saving and investing all matter. We shouldn’t completely remove personal financial discipline from the conversation.
