South Africa VISA Approved!!!😭💪💕🙌🇿🇦 ahhhh, this is a long one! 😂 Sharing our tips for those coming behind us…👇 Ok…We recently completed our appointment at the Los Angeles South African consulate for our permanent visa application. We applied on our own (after initially considering an immigration attorney) and I’m really glad we did. We met with several immigration specialists and attorneys, and one highly recommended by others, told us we didn’t qualify. 🤷🏽‍♀️However, the consulate gave us a conditional approval via email before the appointment. That experience reinforced for us that it’s worth doing your research and not giving up if you believe you meet the requirements. Additionally, we couldn’t justify spending nearly $3,000+ USD for someone to simply review documents while we handled the majority of the work. If you are detail oriented, this is absolutely something you can manage on your own, and I hope the tips we share help in your journey. That said, everyone’s situation is different, and peace of mind matters most - so what works for one person may not be the right choice for another. 🙂 A few important updates and tips from our visit: • If you’re applying for a longterm visa, you can request a letter of authorization from your online or international bank. We printed the last three months of statements and provided authorization letters signed by an executive. That was accepted. • If you’re applying with children or a spouse, every applicant must include the exact same documents as the main applicant — including financials. For example, if you attach 200 pages of financial documents for the primary applicant, each person applying under that application must also have a full copy of the same documents. • Proof of medical insurance is now required (at least at this consulate). Requirements may vary by location, but be prepared to provide it. • Updates happen frequently in the process. It’s possible to arrive and find requirements have changed. Arriving early helps you adjust if something needs to be fixed. We recommend arriving 2.5 to 3 hrs early and check in right away. They will possibly see you earlier if the schedule permits. The Los Angeles office closed at 12pm noon, which we were not aware of. Be sure to note your appointment time and the close time of your consulate in case you have any surprises that need to be worked out. • Return postage is mandatory. It must be a tracking envelope (USPS or UPS — not FedEx) and the large, nonbendable type. If it’s not the correct size or type, you’ll have to leave and purchase one. • Parking at the LA consulate is $25, and they do not validate. If you might need to leave, Uber may be cheaper than paying to park again. • Print out your email appointment confirmation as they will ask for it. If you don’t have it, they will possibly cancel your appointment. • For flight itinerary, we DID NOT purchase a dumby ticket or a regular ticket and cancel in 24 hrs. We simply went to Google Flights, put in the flight info for our desired travel date, plugged in each persons info and right before payment, we printed the document front and back. It was accepted. • Do not print certified documents front and back, only one sided copies are accepted. Anything non certified is fine for front and back copy (such as flight itinerary). • There is a copy center across the street. One place charges $0.25 per copy and $0.50 after that, but the shop next door charges $0.10 per copy - use the cheaper one. • The staff (we worked with Iris and Lisa) were very professional and helpful. 🙂👏🏽They confirmed our application looked strong and said we won’t need to return. If additional information is needed they will allow us to email it. Our advice: plan ahead, arrive early, and give yourself room to handle surprises. They told us that children do not need to attend the appointment, but I would bring them! That could be the one thing they update while you’re traveling to the appointment.🙃 #southafrica
