INSIDIOUS: OUT OF THE FURTHER — 5.5/10 ⭐ As huge fans of the Insidious franchise, this one just fell short for us. It actually starts off really strong. The first half had us locked in, the atmosphere worked, and there were some genuinely good horror sequences and jump scares. Seeing Elise and other familiar faces again was also a great nostalgia hit. But the further it went, the more the story started to fall apart. Our biggest issue was the complete lack of stakes. The original movies made it feel like anything could happen. Characters could die, become possessed, or get trapped in the Further, and sometimes the consequences carried directly into the next movie. Here, even after introducing the massive idea that entities could actually be brought into the physical world, it never felt like our main characters were truly in danger. The new “courier” ability was also a huge problem for us. Being able to bring people and objects between the Further and the physical world should be a MASSIVE development in the lore, but the movie barely explains why this family can do it, where the ability came from, or what its limitations are. It felt more like a convenient way to move the plot forward than a natural expansion of the mythology. We also weren’t sold on the main performances. Nobody was terrible, but compared with the emotion and chemistry of the original Lambert family, we never became attached enough to these characters to really fear losing them. And while we loved seeing the OG characters again, eventually it started feeling more like nostalgia bait than something the story actually needed. The movie is still entertaining. We were locked in, there are some effective scares, and the concept itself has potential. A 5.5/10 doesn’t mean we think it’s terrible. It’s an okay, entertaining horror movie. But we’re judging it as part of the Insidious franchise, and compared with what these movies have done before, it lacks the originality, stakes, lore, and unpredictability that made the earlier films so good. If this were the first Insidious movie ever made, we’d probably rate it higher.
