@murrovv: Azerbaijani Turks (Azərbaycan türkləri) are a Turkic-speaking ethnic group native mainly to Azerbaijan and northwestern Iran. They are often described simply as Azerbaijanis, while “Azerbaijani Turks” emphasizes their Turkic identity. 🏔️ Origins Their ethnogenesis is complex. Modern Azerbaijani Turks developed from a mixture of populations that lived in the South Caucasus and northwestern Iran over many centuries, including: * Ancient and medieval Caucasian peoples, especially populations associated with Caucasian Albania in parts of present-day Azerbaijan. * Iranian-speaking peoples who lived in the region before Turkification. * Various Oghuz Turkic groups, who migrated into the Caucasus and Iran particularly from the 11th century onward. * Other Turkic groups that arrived during later medieval and early-modern periods. So being Azerbaijani Turkic does not mean that every ancestor was a Turkic migrant. The Azerbaijani population formed through Turkification and cultural/linguistic integration of older regional populations together with incoming Turkic groups. 🐺 Language and Oghuz identity Azerbaijani belongs to the Oghuz branch of Turkic, together with Turkish, Turkmen and Gagauz. Historically important Oghuz-associated dynasties and confederations included the Seljuks, Qara Qoyunlu, Aq Qoyunlu and Safavids. The Safavid period was particularly important for the development of Azerbaijani Turkic literary culture. Modern Azerbaijani has two major standards: * Azerbaijani (North) — primarily Azerbaijan and Dagestan * Azerbaijani (South) — mainly northwestern Iran 🇦🇿 Culture Azerbaijani Turkic culture combines Turkic, Caucasian, Iranian and Islamic historical influences.
