Dozens of pigeons were killed by the tempest when hail stones of more than 5cm in diameter fell from the skies. Footage of the aftermath shows birds lying lifelessly in the streets. Residents shared the devastation on social media, with one local describing the event on Monday as causing a “genuine massacre” of the city’s pigeon population. Flash flooding turned streets into rivers, with one man swept downstream, and cars were seen battling 117kph winds. According to local media, three people were taken to hospital after sustaining injuries during the chaos, but none are in a serious condition. The 112 emergency line reportedly received 769 calls as the skies opened, generating more than 500 official incident reports across the province.
