@samftbl10: France were preparing to host the following summer’s World Cup, while Brazil arrived in Lyon as the reigning world champions and the No. 1-ranked team in the world. The Tournoi de France was designed as a serious World Cup rehearsal, bringing together Brazil, France, England and Italy. Mario Zagallo’s Brazil had an extraordinary attacking pairing in Ronaldo and Romário, backed by Cafu, Aldair, Dunga, Mauro Silva, Leonardo and Roberto Carlos. France, meanwhile, were building the side that would go on to win the 1998 World Cup, with Zidane, Deschamps, Desailly, Blanc, Lizarazu and a young Patrick Vieira in the squad. The match is remembered above all for Roberto Carlos’ extraordinary set piece. From roughly 35 metres, the left-back struck the ball with the outside of his left foot, sending it around the French wall and into the corner. Contemporary Le Monde described it as a “supersonic” free-kick. For France, Marc Keller’s equaliser ensured the game ended level, but the wider significance was the meeting of two sides who would become central to the 1998 World Cup story just one year later. Brazil were defending their crown, France were building towards their first. #selecaobrasileira #equipedefrance #zinedinezidane #ronaldonazario #robertocarlos
