There was nothing dumb about it, Tanjiro literally beheads him head on after he says that with no issues. And later on akaza says he accepts his defeat because of how Tanjiro beheaded him and he hates cowards that don’t fight head on.

Someone did a whole video about this and if tanjiro didn’t warn akaza about and beheaded akaza he would have infuriated him more causing him to fully regenerate his head because Akaza hates when people sneak up on others that’s why he’s relying on his compass
