It gives Gengar a completely different feeling from the usual image of him as this mischievous, creepy Pokémon. The scene shows Gengar being left behind by its trainer, and what makes it hurt is how confused and desperate Gengar seems. It doesn’t immediately become angry or vengeful. It waits. It looks like it genuinely believes its trainer is coming back for it. That tiny bit of hope makes the abandonment feel much worse. Gengar is often portrayed as a Pokémon that hides behind a huge grin, but that scene makes you wonder what’s underneath it. Maybe the creepy smile isn’t always happiness.
