That goes with friends and family too. If we invite you out we are obviously paying, but a thank you is appreciated or even “pretend to offer” tells me you appreciate it.

My husband and I have been married going on 30 years. I thank him whenever he picks up the check. I thank him for taking out the garbage… but he is appreciative of me too. It’s part of the relationship.
