She gently ran her fingers through Lisa’s hair. “Go shower.” Lisa looked up with a mischievous grin. “Can you bathe me? My arm is totally paralyzed.” Jennie rolled her eyes. “It’s just a small wound, Lisa.” “It’s a serious injury,” Lisa teased, wrapping her good arm around Jennie’s waist. “Lisa, stop.” “Actually…” Lisa grinned. “Since I only have one working arm, maybe you should bathe with me. For safety.” Jennie raised an eyebrowl, playful smirk touching her lips. “Oh? So the brave firefighter suddenly can’t wash her own hair because of a tiny cut?” “It’s a very tragic handicap,” Lisa said dramatically. “I might slip. I might drown. Jennie shook her head, trying not to laugh. “Fine. Just don’t do anything stupid. We’re only bathing.” Lisa wiggled her eyebrows and pulled Jennie down onto her lap. “Define 'stupid.' Does staring at you count? Or kissing you? Because I can't promise I won't do that.” Before Jennie could answer, Lisa leaned in pressing a slow, gentle kiss to her lips. It started sweet, softening Jennie's defenses, before deepening into something warm and quiet that made the rest of the world melt away. When Lisa pulled back, her eyes were dark with affection, her thumb tracing Jennie's cheekbone. Jennie flushed, her heart beating fast as she lightly flicked Lisa’s forehead to cover her blush. “Lisa! I said just bathing.” “I’m helpless, Doc. It’s part of my therapy,” Lisa laughed softly. Jennie laughed. “Come on.” Lisa stood, took Jennie’s hand, and led her toward the bathroom. “Easy, tiger,” Jennie teased. “For someone with a paralyzed arm, you sure move fast.” “I have a very speedy recovery rate when my doctor is this cute.” Their laughter followed them down the hallway. Jennie stirred. “Are you awake?” “Maybe.” “You’re supposed to be resting,” Jennie murmured, eyes still closed. “I am.” “You’re holding me.” “That’s resting.” Jennie finally opened her eyes, giving her a sleepy, fond look. Lisa smiled down at her. “Good morning.” “Good morning.” Leaning in, Lisa pressed a soft kiss to her forehead, then another to her cheek. A small smile tugged at Jennie’s lips. “You’re only being this sweet because you feel guilty.” Lisa hugged her a little tighter. “I really am sorry, love.” “I know,” Jennie whispered. For a long, peaceful moment, they just lay there, wrapped in each other's warmth. Then Lisa’s phone buzzed on the nightstand. She reached for it and glanced at the screen—Station 23. Her smile slowly faded, and Jennie caught the shift instantly. “Duty?” Jennie asked softly. Lisa nodded, letting out a small sigh. “Looks like it.” Jennie reluctantly loosened her arms and let Lisa sit up. “Be careful out there.” “I will,” Lisa said, sitting up on the edge of the bed. Jennie raised an eyebrow. “Really?” Lisa turned back with a warm, reassuring smile. “Really. I promise.” She leaned down and pressed one last soft kiss to Jennie’s lips. “I’ll always come home to you.” Jennie watched her quietly as Lisa stood up to get ready.
