I used to say that life is hard, but life becomes a different kind of hard when you lose a parent especially when you lose your mother at only 15 years old. I had to grow up before I was ready. I had to learn how to keep my feelings inside, face things on my own, make mistakes without anyone there to guide me, and somehow figure out life while I was still just a kid myself. The person I would normally run to for comfort, advice, protection, or simply a hug was gone. Then, while I was still grieving, everything around me started changing so quickly. Within a year, my father got with someone else, and suddenly there was another person living in what was once our home. I don’t think anyone will ever truly understand what that felt like for me. My whole world had already fallen apart when I lost my mom, and before I even had the chance to process that loss, I felt like I was expected to accept an entirely new life. Instead of anyone stopping to ask how I was doing, I became the “bad guy.” I was called selfish because people thought I didn’t want to see my father happy. I was seen as the rebellious teenager with an attitude. I was called so many things, but no one seemed to stop and think about the fact that behind all of that was a 15 year old girl who had just lost her mother. The hardest part is knowing that the one person who would’ve stood beside me, defended me, listened to me, and understood me was the person I had just lost. My mom was gone, and suddenly I felt like I had no one in my corner. Looking back now, I realize how much I went through without anyone protecting me. I realize how many times my feelings were dismissed and how vulnerable I was because I didn’t have my mother there to defend me anymore. What hurt even more was feeling like my own father never stopped to truly consider what I was going through or how all of those changes were affecting me. I wouldn’t wish that feeling on anyone. And the truth is, I’m still living through parts of it today. I’ve just learned to be quiet. I’ve learned not to explain myself because, after being unheard for so long, you eventually start believing there is no point. When my mom was here, I felt like my feelings mattered. I felt seen. I felt protected. After she left, that feeling disappeared with her. So now I keep to myself. I work to keep my mind busy. I go out to distract myself. I find things to do so I don’t have to sit too long with everything I’ve carried inside of me for all these years. From the outside, it may look like I’ve moved on or that I’m okay. But deep down, there is still a part of me that is that 15 year old girl. A girl who didn’t need to be judged. A girl who didn’t need to be called selfish or rebellious. A girl who was grieving her mother and needed someone to understand that her entire world had just changed. And sometimes, deep down, I still wish someone would see that girl. I wish someone would hear her. I wish, even for a moment, I could feel as seen, heard, loved, and protected as I did when my mother was still here.
