Hello! St Edward's Crown is the crown historically used at the moment of Coronation, and worn by her Majesty Queen Elizabeth at her Coronation in 1953. It was made for Charles II in 1661, as a replacement for the medieval crown which had been melted down in 1649. The original was thought to date back to the eleventh-century royal saint. Edward the Confessor - the last Anglo-Saxon king of England. The crown was commissioned from the Royal Goldsmith, Sir Robert Vyner ( 1631-1688 ) was one of the most prominent figureheads of 17th-century luxury craftsmanship, finance, and royal service. As the official Royal Goldsmith to King Charles II, Vyner legacy is permanently forged into British history: he was the man responisble for replacing the Crown Jewels destroyed during the English Civil War. When Charles II was restored to the throne in 1660, he faced a glaring problem: Oliver Cromwell's Parliamentarians had melted down or sold virtually all the ancient, medieval regalia. To establish the legitimacy of the new Restoration court, Charles II needed a spectacular display of majesty for his 1661 coronation. He commissioned Vyner to oversee the massive project. Rather than hammering the gold himself, Vyner acted as a master merchant-financier and project manager, coordinating an elite network of London's finest anonymous goldsmiths, jewelers, and silversmiths. In the 17th century, the lines between elite craftsmanship and high finance were deeply blurred. Wealthy citizens deposited their gold with elite goldsmiths for safekeeping. Vyner used these vast reserves to act as a principal banker, extending enormous lines of credit to the Crown to fund wars, naval fleets, and the famously extravagant lifestyles of the Merry Monarch's court. Despite his intimacy with the King, lending money to the Stuarts was a perilous business. In 1672, facing massive military debts, Charles II issued the Great Stop of the Exchequer, abruptly suspended all loan repayments to private bankers. The Crown owed Vyner over £416,000-the largest debt owed to any single lender. This catastrophic default sent Shockwave through his business. While the King granted him a yearly annuity from the national excise to stave off immediate disaster, Vyner's creditors eventually closed in. He was declared bankrupt in the early 1680s and died in Windsor in 1688, a poignant example of how proximity to royal splendor could yield both the highest honors and absolute financial ruin.
