One of the worst things you can do during problems in your marriage is turn your children into allies against your spouse. Your child is not your therapist. They’re not your friend who needs to hear your side of the story. And they definitely shouldn’t be put in a position where they feel like they have to choose between their mum and dad. I understand that sometimes you’re angry. Sometimes your spouse has genuinely hurt you. Sometimes you might even have completely valid reasons to be upset. But your children don’t need to carry the emotional weight of your marriage. Because every time you insult their father in front of them, roll your eyes when his name is mentioned or tell them things designed to make them dislike him... You’re not just attacking your husband. You’re changing the way your children see their father. And eventually, that can affect the authority and stability within your own home. The same principle applies to fathers speaking badly about their children's mother. Whatever problems exist between husband and wife should be dealt with by the adults. Not through the children. There may be situations involving genuine harm or safety where children need appropriate support and honest conversations. But that's very different from using them as ammunition during marital conflict. Your marriage might be going through a difficult period. You might be angry with each other. You might even eventually decide you cannot remain together. But wherever possible, allow your children to love and respect both of their parents without feeling guilty for it. Don’t make your children inherit a resentment that belonged to you.
