You are typing less than you have ever typed in your life, and you are more tired than you have ever been. That combination is strange enough that it deserves a better explanation than screen time. Here’s what’s actually going on, and it’s two separate things that everybody talks about as one. The first one is about what got taken away. Think about how work used to go. Most of your day was low effort. Gathering things, wiring things together, waiting for something to finish. It wasn’t nothing, but it wasn’t hard. The genuinely demanding part, the deciding, was maybe twenty percent of your hours. That boring eighty percent was doing something. It was where your brain caught up. You’d be halfway through some mechanical task and realise the decision you made an hour ago was wrong, and fixing it cost nothing, because nothing was finished yet. AI took the eighty percent. What’s left is the hard part, back to back, all day. Somebody described it as turning every developer into a lead developer, and that’s exactly right. Leading is the tiring part of leading. It always was. Most people who do it get to alternate it with something else. You’ve lost the alternation, and nobody mentioned the alternation was load bearing. The second thing is switching. Making forty hard decisions about one thing is tiring. Making forty hard decisions across seven kinds of work and four parts of your product is tiring in a completely different and worse way, because every single one asks you to put down one context and pick up another. If you run multiple sessions at once, that’s your whole day. And you’ve done the thing where you type an instruction into the wrong session. Everybody has. It’s funny when it happens, and it’s also a pretty clean signal that the contexts have started to blur. Now here’s the part I keep coming back to. The research on this studied people at large companies. Every one of them had a job title, one lane, and somebody to check their work. One in seven of those people hit the wall anyway. Nobody has measured what this looks like for a solo founder with none of that. So one in seven is a floor, not a ceiling. And the reason that matters is that you’ve probably been assuming this is a discipline problem. It isn’t. It’s structural, and structural things have fixes. Article’s called “When Everything Gets Faster, You Make More Decisions.” Link’s in the comments. #ai #business #vibecoding #work #founder
