Replying to @julesmarchisio Hope this helps a little bit. It's a huge topic to cover in just a few minutes. You can think of a wallet as a "storage spot" on the blockchain of the coin that you purchased. for XRP, the blockchain is the XRP ledger. For bitcoin, it would be the btc blockchain, most coins have their own unique blockchain. Having your crypto stored on an exchange is bad for a few reasons: 1) The regulatory climate is uncertain given how new the asset class is. Banks have been around forever and the regulations are clear. You can't say the same for crypto exchanges. This means exchanges could be subject to lengthy and expensive lawsuits that may put them at risk of bankruptcy etc. 2) Your crypto is at risk of being attacked by a bad actor. There are people who work for these exchanges and all it takes is one bad actor to ruin your holdings. (say an employee wants to steal from you). 3) By holding on an exchange, you put your crypto at risk of being "hacked". When you self custody it, no one can access it besides you (unless they manage to find a copy of your private keys that are generated when you initially make your wallet). When you use an exchange, someone could use a phishing attack or sim swap and gain access to your account. Once they have access to your account (for whatever exchange you use) they could theoretically send your crypto out of it. 4) Crypto is all about SELF custody! Take back control over your wealth! Using an exchange (besides for off ramping or trading) is almost antithetical to what crypto stands for. When you store crypto on a cold wallet (self custodied) you basically have it burried in you backyard, so to speak.
