The woman looked straight at him. “No,” she said quietly. “It belongs to me.” The lobby began to murmur. Guests stepped closer. Phones slowly lifted. Then the elevator dinged. Everyone turned. The golden doors slid open. A tall elegant woman stepped out, dressed in black, two lawyers behind her. She walked straight across the marble floor without looking at anyone else. The manager started sweating. She stopped in front of the old woman. For one second, no one breathed. Then the elegant woman lowered her head respectfully and said: “Mother... we found the papers.” The manager stumbled backward.
